Zaon sat on the edge of a high mountain cliff and gazed upon Drakkënden. His father had been in human form but had left him to walk down the mountain. From his viewpoint, Zaon had lost track of him, but then he saw a dragon transforming.

Zaon watched his father’s transformation in silence. It was a sight he never tired of. He remembered life before he knew his father was a dragon. Zaon grew up with his mother, Elona, and his father, and they had lived for many years as any other human family would. Rodkinthereldiss had magic, so that was nothing new to Zaon, but at times his father would leave, stating work required him to travel. Neither Elona nor Zaon gave much thought to this because Rodkinthereldiss always came back at an appropriate time, bearing gifts, which thrilled young Zaon to no end.

They had been a happy family with a simple life—nothing too ambitious.

Then one day when Rodkinthereldiss was away, Elona fell ill. As a young man at the time, Zaon carried her to the village physician, but the physician’s supplies were limited, and he had no magic. No one in the village except for Rodkinthereldiss had magic, and he was gone. Zaon tried to call out to Rodkinthereldiss, but nothing happened. His mother died in his arms, and his father remained gone for over a century.

During all that time, Zaon hadn’t known that he was part dragon, but he knew something wasn’t right when he stopped aging but remained youthful while everyone around him grew old, withered away, and died.

Anger resided in Zaon for many, many years.

When Rodkinthereldiss had finally showed up once more, Zaon was both shocked and yet not surprised at all. Rodkinthereldiss let Zaon punch him until he finally had enough and simply morphed into his dragon form. In that moment, all Zaon’s questions were answered, but they were replaced with new ones.

Zaon remembered the days that followed the revelation. Rodkinthereldiss sat down with him in human form and explained the dragon culture and what it meant to be an Ancient Dragon. He also expounded how Zaon himself possessed these same abilities if only he tapped into them. With Rodkinthereldiss’ help, Zaon discovered his own magical abilities, but neither one of them managed to trigger his dragon transformation. Rodkinthereldiss said when the time was right, he would make the shift, but that had been many centuries ago. Zaon still hadn’t made the change.

He sat on the mountain with his feet dangling off the edge, and his father, now the size of the mountain in dragon form, drew near to him.

“Is it true?” Rodkinthereldiss asked in his deep voice. “Did you aid the escape of Prince Meldiron?”

Zaon nodded. “And I have no regrets!” He chuckled a little. “It’s always amusing to see just how flustered the kelliphs get when things do not go their way.”

Rodkinthereldiss sighed then cast his gaze to the horizon. “They come for us now.” Even now, he could see a kelliph army approaching the border of Drakkënden.
